The National Academy of Sciences announced today the election of 84 new members and 21 foreign associates from 14 countries in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.
Those elected today bring the total number of active members to 2,291 and the total number of foreign associates to 465. Foreign associates are nonvoting members of the Academy, with citizenship outside the United States.
Newly elected members and their affiliations at the time of election are:
Hu, Wayne; Horace B. Horton Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics and member, Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics, The University of Chicago, Chicago
Liu, Andrea J.; Hepburn Professor, department of physics and astronomy, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia
Meng, Xiang-Jin; professor of molecular virology, College of Veterinary Medicine; professor of internal medicine, Carilion School of Medicine; and professor, department of biomedical sciences and pathobiology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg
Yang, Peidong; S.K. and Angela Chan Distinguished Professor of Energy and professor of chemistry, department of chemistry, University of California, Berkeley
Newly elected foreign associates, their affiliations at the time of election, and their country of citizenship are:
An, Zhisheng; professor, Institute of Earth Environment, and member, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xi’an, People’s Republic of China（People’s Republic of China）
美国国家科学院（NAS）3日公布2016年新增院士及外籍院士名单：华人科学家杨培东、戴宏杰、孟祥金、刘安吉（Andrea Liu，音译）及胡韦恩（Wayne Hu，音译）当选院士，而中国科学院环境地质学家安芷生，则当选外籍院士。
国家科学院今年新增84名美国科学家院士，并从14个国家中选出21名外籍新院士。目前国家科学院的院士达2291人，外籍院士465人。
来自江苏苏州的杨培东是纳米材料学家，现为加州大学柏克莱分校教授。他获奖无数，还曾斩获2015年度的美国麦克阿瑟基金会「天才奖」。
出生于湖南邵阳的戴宏杰，也是纳米技术专家。由清华大学毕业后，他先后从哥伦比亚大学和哈佛大学获得硕、博学位，目前是史丹佛大学化学系教授。
维吉尼亚理工大学教授孟祥金，是分子病毒学专家，他从武汉大学医学院获硕士学位之后，从爱阿华（Iowa）州立大学取得博士学位。
刘安吉则是5位华裔新院士中唯一的女性，她先后从加州大学柏克莱分校和康乃尔大学获得本科与博士学位，目前是宾夕法尼亚大学物理系教授。
胡韦恩则从普林斯顿的物理系本科、硕士毕业后，由加州大学柏克莱分校获博士学位，目前是芝加哥大学天文及天体物理学系的教授。
