南京江宁开发区创办于1992年6月，1993年被批准为省级开发区，1997年经国家科委批准按一区多园设立5平方公里国家级高新技术工业园，2002年经省委、省政府批准赋予国家级开发区经济审批权限。2010年11月11日，被国务院批准升级为国家级经济技术开发区。
开发区经过20年的发展，已成为南京地区建设发展最快、发展环境最优、产业竞争力最强的开发区，综合实力和品牌影响力位居全省开发区前列。近年来，开发区在市区正确领导下，加快转型发展、创新发展、跨越发展，经济社会始终保持又好又快发展势头。
