Co-sponsored by the National City Mile of Cars, this free event brings together more than 200 car owners who will showcase their automobiles and compete for awards. The Festival & Car Show will showcase classic antique cars, show cars from the 30s, 40s, and 50s, muscle cars, the latest in electric vehicles, and much more. In partnership with the National City Mile of Cars, the California Plug-In Electric Vehicle (PEV) Collaborative (www.pevcollaborative.org), and San Diego Gas & Electric, this year’s show features opportunities to test drive electric vehicles, such as the Ford e-Focus, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the Nissan Leaf, the Fiat 500e, the Chevy Volt, and the Volkswagon eGolf.
Auto Show attendees will enjoy great food, dancing, children’s entertainment, the Magic of Alfonso, a free kids soccer clinic, carnival games, and live music by Wildside and the Allegro Music School band. An awards ceremony at 3 p.m. will showcase the Auto Show’s first-place winners selected through a competitive ranking system by experienced car judges. Visitors to the event are also encouraged to vote for their favorite car, which will be given The People’s Choice Award. Also check out National City’s vintage Fire Engine, historic Rail Car, and the new Police Rescue bat-mobile!

Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational trades tuxedos and ballrooms for surfboards and sand. The event kicks off at 7 a.m. on the beach near Scripps Pier with a surfing tournament, where teams of four are paired with a surf legend to compete in the contest. Past legends have included Fernando Aguerre, Debbie Beacham and Rob Machado. The luau follows at noon with live entertainment and a tropical buffet. Live and silent auctions will feature one-of-a-kind pieces of surf-inspired artwork, exceptional surfboards and vacation packages. The program closes with the presentation of the Rell Sunn Award, which honors an individual who has made a difference in the battle against cancer and who embodies the “aloha spirit.” The 2015 honoree is Dr. Carl June, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania who is at the forefront of investigating a promising new treatment: immunotherapy. All proceeds from the Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational will benefit UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. To date, the annual event has raised nearly $6.5 million to help transform cancer prevention, detection and care.
